In the European retail and consumer sectors, the trend for outsourcing logistics is set to continue. As clients seek fewer providers, third party logistics companies (3PLs) stand to gain.

3PLs must be aware of the threat of freight forwarders that take on ‘logistics’ dimensions such as value-add - they could win business, particularly from smaller clients. Also, as some large European retailers embrace factory gate pricing and take control of the supply chain, they may favor assets over expertise.

In certain countries where the logistics market is less mature or consolidated, 3PL service levels often fail to match customer expectations. A 3PL that can meet requirements, reduce clients’ costs and improve their efficiency, stands to capitalize upon this unmet demand.
