Advances in Technology Shift Focus of Pervasive Communication to Building Automation Space

The future of human civilization revolves around the idea of pervasive communication, which is envisioned to be so powerful that everyday devices will be able to identify each other’s presence, role, and interactions in a beneficial manner. Sensing of physical environmental conditions will be extremely easy with high reliability, rather than just being a data acquisition activity. Traditional building automation systems have been able to obtain limited benefits from the information present in devices, systems, and physical environment, due to the limitation of wiring areas. Again the cost, convenience, and time associated with wiring the entire infrastructure have created a gap between application needs and offered capabilities. Installing new sensors, connecting hard-to-wire areas with systems, monitoring device or structural health, and commissioning new systems or retro-fitting, offer a very limited scope of deployment. Wireless communication-based devices provide the answer for all these problems. Cost and reliability, which form the underlying factors for adoption of a disruptive technology such as wireless in the building automation space, have reached a stage wherein the various factions of building industry can evaluate wireless technology, and deploy it immediately to avail the tangible and intangible benefits offered by it.

Wired infrastructures have traditionally dominated the building automation space with decades of technological evolution often marred by limited technical capability, presence of proprietary solutions, or cost. "However, in the recent years wired building automation systems have taken building operation to new heights through deployment of sensor network, embedded intelligence in field level devices, greater device integration, and decision making control strategies," explains the analyst. "All these have translated into a future of building automation, which will provide excellent comfort levels, state-of-the-art security, optimized operational costs, and exceptional smartness."
