A lack of killer consumer applications, overall solution complexity and vendor interoperability issues have led some to conclude that the business case for implementing a full IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) reference architecture is still many years away. The lack of clarity about demand for IMS applications forces the initial business case justification to focus at the network convergence layer, which is much more challenging—especially for operators that are still depreciating their legacy PSTN network investments.
