Mobile Enterprise Segment Poised to Make Higher Contributions to Mobile Operator Revenues

With the increasing focus on enterprise mobility, the mobile enterprise market in Asia Pacific has demonstrated robust expansion, growing over 68.9 percent between 2003 and 2006. This considerably young segment is set to contribute positively to mobile operator revenues in the long term. However, it is still considered a small market when compared to the consumer segment, which contributed between 61.8 percent and 97.5 percent of the overall mobile revenues across Asia Pacific in 2006. "Countries such as New Zealand, Australia, and Singapore, which have high cellular penetration rates are among the forerunners in terms of mobile enterprise-to-mobile revenue ratio," according to the analyst of the study. "The relative maturity of these mobile enterprise markets can be attributed to increasing market segmentation and push strategies of service providers who are facing intense competition in their highly saturated consumer mobile market."

Despite also having high mobile penetration rates, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Malaysia have comparatively low enterprise-to-total mobile revenue ratio mainly attributed to their strong focus on the consumer segment. China and India are the two most populous countries in the world, but demonstrate two vastly different contributions from mobile enterprise to overall revenues. However, both countries also share similar characteristics since their cellular subscribers and enterprise markets concentrate mainly in major cities and urban towns. Rapid growth of subscribers is expected over the long term in both these countries due to expansion to rural areas; however, the growth in the mobile consumer segment is expected to outpace the growth of mobile enterprise segment.

Roles of Mobile Operators are Evolving Amidst Robust Growth in the Mobile Enterprise

In 2006, the revenues in the mobile enterprise market in Asia Pacific were $20.74 billion. Despite technological advancements, traditional voice still dominates the mobile enterprise market, contributing more than 80.0 percent of the total Asia Pacific enterprise mobile revenue. Much of mobile enterprise growth in the future are expected to emanate from mobile messaging services including mobile e-mail, which have been the most significant revenue contributors for the mobile enterprise market as well as most popular applications with the enterprise customers. However, in the medium term, specialized solutions for various vertical industries such as sales force automation (SFA) and customer relationship management (CRM) are expected to contribute to the success of this market.

Though many enterprises are avidly considering mobility to empower employees to increase productivity and reduce business costs, the role of mobile operators in promoting such business process automation remains limited. "It is generally vendors and system integrators or independent solution vendors (ISVs) who are dominating the market and advancing mobile enterprise by developing solutions directed toward customers," explains the analyst. "The roles are, however, changing and mobile operators are expected to build the expertise or strengthen partnerships required to provide end-to-end mobile enterprise solutions to customers."
