BMI has made significant changes to its internet and broadband forecasts. At the end of 2006, figuresprovided by the ITU reveal there were 15.3mn internet users, an increase of 7.8% y-o-y, compared to2005 growth of 9.2% y-o-y. By the end of 2007, we expect a little over 16mn internet users, rising to19mn by the end of our forecast period in 2012. Internet service take-up is being superseded bydevelopments occurring in the broadband market. With little forward development regarding thedeployment of Australia’s high-speed network, as Telstra and the ACCC reach stalemate, alternativeISPs have spotted an opportunity in the market. Internode for example is ready to commit AUE9mn intoexpanding its ADSL2+ network coverage, while Primus has announced it will boost its fibre-optictransmission capacity ten-fold.
