There is no doubt that Americans spend a lot of time in their vehicles, with the typical individual spending about 16.5 hours a week in his vehicle. Given the amount of time that consumers are spending in their cars, it’s not surprising that they’re choosing to outfit their vehicles with the latest in-vehicle information and entertainment technologies. Whether these devices are actually installed in the vehicle, like satellite radio and navigation products, or merely carried there by the vehicle occupants, like portable MP3 players and cell phones, the trend is clear. More and more Americans are using CE devices in the vehicle than ever before. This body of research reveals which consumer technologies consumers are using and what technologies they desire for the future.

It also explores the role of portable technologies and issues surrounding aftermarket in-vehicle products. Special thanks to the following CEA member companies who contributed to the design of this body of research: Alpine Electronics of America, Inc., Audiovox Electronics Corp, Delphi, Directed Electronics, Inc., DTS, Dual Electronics Corp., Johnson Controls, Inc., and Sirius Satellite Radio.
