This IDC study examines how training professionals are managing a mix of delivery methods in an effort to achieve the ideal blend for their organizations. It looks at what factors are driving the selection process, how IDC expects the blend to change over the next 12?18 months, and which delivery methods are valued most. A recent survey of Chief Learning Officer magazine's Business Intelligence Board (BIB) on blended learning revealed that:

The blend continues to be primarily determined by the instructor or training department, with classroom-based instructor-led training (C-ILT) and elearning the two most prevalent modalities. The growth of C-ILT delivery may slow, but it will not disappear due to learner preference and value of live instructor/student and student/student interactions. Sometimes, C-ILT is the most appropriate delivery method for certain types of content (e.g., presentation skills). The greatest change in the delivery mix over the next 12?18 months will continue to come from increased adoption of elearning, with asynchronous more popular than synchronous elearning. This will be followed by growth in the portable technologies to address the training demands of an increasingly mobile U.S. workforce.

"A mix of blended learning can be synergistic," said Susan Lee, research analyst for IDC's Corporate Learning service. "Having the right mix of learning delivery can be complementary and promote the adoption of all related training efforts."
