This is the essential challenge facing network operators today, whether those operators are facilities-based service providers, large enterprises, governments or other providers. In many ways, the network is a utility, moving packets from one point to another. However, particularly in the case of facilities-based service providers, they cannot afford (nor should they accept) a business model that relegates the network to a series of “dumb pipes.” So naturally, the question arises of how to create a more intelligent, dynamic network of “smart pipes” that adds value to traffic riding over the top.

Many operators are turning to deep packet inspection (DPI) to answer this question. DPI enables the operator to inspect individual packets with greater granularity than traditional network elements such as a router, broadband remote access server (B-RAS) or demarcation device. Through stateful inspection of both the packet header and payload, operators can extract critical information including application type, subscriber source, specific application protocol and subscriber location. Yet increasingly, the market for DPI is being pulled in multiple distinct directions, and this has broadened the addressable market for the technology and the ecosystem of players that stand to benefit from its deployment.
