Market Overview
Video Applications Driving Market Growth
The explosion of video applications and the consequent need for more bandwidth to distribute them are driving growth in the commercial satellite transponder market. While the rapid growth of high definition (HD) has been instrumental in the development of the North American and European markets, the Asia Pacific region has been slower to adopt HD. However, this is now changing with added transponder capacity in the region and HD looks set to take off in the Asia Pacific as well. It is incumbent upon operators in the Asia Pacific region to be informed about transponder capacity and what the projections are for revenue and lease pricing to help them compete with their services.
Interestingly, Asia has more commercial satellite operators than any other region. There are 24 different satellite operators addressing the market and this number is expected to remain fairly stable. Around 62 percent of the available capacity in this market is controlled by four operators, namely, Shin Satellite, Intelsat, JSAT, and APT Sat. "The satellite transponder portfolio in Asia is made up of C, Ku, and Ka capacity and with a total combined available capacity of 3411.5 transponders (36MHz equivalent), Asia accounts for 34 percent of the total world supply," notes the analyst of this research service. "Furthermore, the utilization rate for the Asian satellite transponder market is expected to increase steadily from around 40 percent to 55 percent throughout the forecast period."
Video Distribution and DTH are the Major Application Segments
Quite significantly, video distribution and direct-to-home (DTH) applications are expected to account for approximately 59.5 percent of the total leased transponders in the Asian market by 2011. However, intense competition from terrestrial wireline and wireless technologies is likely to limit the penetration of satellite applications. National regulations in Asian countries are also likely to increase market barriers and slow the growth of satellite services. Inherent limitations in satellite technology are anticipated to remain an important hurdle for providers to overcome.
In the face of intense competition, satellite service providers must develop new strategies such as forming alliances with operators already in the market and developing new applications in the emerging services to overcome significant obstacles. "Applications in video distribution and other emerging networking applications are the future of satellite services and the leasing of transponders," said the analyst. "The ability of operators to understand those trends and develop strategies to take advantage of them will determine their success in the market."
