The ultimate goal of a SmartPhone is to be able to replace the use of a laptop or PDA for mobile workers. In-Stat surveyed 790 users to find how the industry is performing in achieving this goal. While SmartPhones are the most valued device—more than laptops or PDAs—there are several obstacles that need to be overcome. Manufacturers need to overcome objections to small screen size and bad keyboards, while software companies need to make the applications operate in a similar fashion, as well as synchronize. A more stubborn obstacle is the behavior of mobile workers, who often want to carry redundant devices, such as a PDA and a SmartPhone.
