2006 Development of the Japanese Mobile Phone Market and Industry

In 2005, Japanese mobile phone subscribers topped 90 million, with the market gradually entering the saturation stage as the penetration rate hit 74%. Meanwhile, the Japanese mobile phone market reached a scale of 44.9 million units, 73% of which were 3G models. Japanese mobile phone vendors also encountered a bottleneck in overseas markets, as evidenced by Toshiba, Panasonic, NEC, and Mitsubishi withdrawing from the Chinese market or value-line market and shifting to consolidate the Japanese market. With the fierce competition in Japanese and overseas markets, the Japanese mobile phone market is expected to see a series of M&A activities in 2006. This report will review the performance of the Japanese mobile phone industry in 2005 and the first quarter of 2006, and analyze its development in 2006.
