European Rail & Intermodal 2008
|

As part of a long-standing plan to revitalise the rail
industry in the European Community, from January
2007 all European Union (EU) rail freight lines were
opened up to competition. Up until then only
international freight services, which represented
approximately half of the total market for the rail
transport of goods in Europe, were liberalised.
The European Commission is hoping as a result of
this change that rail freight will now attract new
investors and customers by offering services that are
more adapted to the needs of the market. The main
hope is that the railways will steadily increase their
market shares.
Freight movement within Western Europe has been a
growing market for many years. Although there has
been a substantial decline in traditional rail freight
markets, especially the movement of heavy goods
such as coal and steel, the overall growth of freight
shipments has enabled the rail freight market to
maintain its volumes in recent years, despite losing
market share.
