Key points
- Consumer spending on video is likely to plateau in 2005 despite the fact that there will be more videos sold this year than ever before.
- European consumer spending on DVD (retail and rental) is expected to reach to 12.6bn in 2005, almost 30 times the size of consumer spending on VHS in 2005, just 0.4bn.
- For the second year running the growth in spending on video in Central and Eastern Europe is expected to be greater than that in West Europe, However, growth in both regions will slow down considerably (0.7 per cent growth compared to 0.4 per cent).
- This overview covers the 22 European countries analysed in detail by Screen Digest. The five largest European video markets, UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, will account for more than three quarters of consumer spending in Europe in 2005, whilst just under two thirds will be generated by the top three countries.
- By the end of 2004 there was a DVD player/recorder in more than half of West European television households.
- Spending on DVD rental in Europe is expected to reach reached 2.2bn in 2005 15 of the 22 countries analysed experienced an increase in the average number of DVD discs purchased per DVD equipped household in 2004, however this total is expected to fall to 10 in 2005.
- Average European DVD consumer prices are expected to fall by more than 10% in 2005
