Market Overview
Fixed Mobile Convergence’s Provision of Alternate Revenue Streams Gladden Telecom Service Providers
The popularity of fixed mobile convergence (FMC) in the telecom industry is hardly surprising, considering it enables service providers to meet the growing need for ubiquitous, seamless connectivity among fixed, mobile, and multimedia services. With increasing competition affecting topline growth, service providers are looking to reduce cost as well as create alternate revenue streams. "FMC is at the center of the business plans of fixed line service providers," notes the analyst. "As fixed line revenues continue to dwindle, FMC offers a lucrative option of not only stemming fixed mobile substitution (FMS) but also creating profitable revenue streams."
While FMC has not yet been widely deployed in Asia Pacific, it forms an integral part of the service providers’ growth strategies in the near future. Currently, fixed and mobile networks still exist as disparate silos in many Asia Pacific markets. However, the increasing emphasis on mobility and enhanced lifestyles are creating a huge demand for FMC. Service providers in advanced telecom markets such as Korea and Japan have introduced dual mode handsets that switch seamlessly between fixed and mobile networks.
Technological Advances Hasten the Move toward Fixed Mobile Convergence
The introduction of FMC services is expected to create a paradigm shift from voice-centric model to feature rich content-based model. Numerous technological developments, coupled with the increased emphasis on mobility, have hastened the deployment of fixed and mobile services over a unified framework, thereby enabling the evolution of the niche FMC market. The increased emphasis on mobility indicate that users wish to access voice and feature-rich multimedia services with a single device, irrespective of their location.
Service providers will be aiming to offer bundled applications by utilizing the existing capabilities in the network. Hence, the transition to pure FMC services is likely to gradually move from service bundling to providing advanced seamless connectivity. "Improvements in the quality of dual mode handsets coupled with a transparent regulatory framework would hasten the growth of FMC services," notes the analyst. "Though FMC is not a new concept, the evolution of access technologies such as digital subscriber line (DSL), unlicensed mobile access (UMA), and global system for mobile communications (GSM) as well as the growing demand for enhanced user experience has created a strong business case for FMC."
