In-Stat examines the storage market in the laptop/notebook computing market. Currently consumers are accustomed to selecting the mobile computer with the largest hard drive for the budgeted money, but given Flash-based SSD’s features, end-users may find cause to survey their actual needs. By “economizing” storage space, rather than going “bulk,” in the not too distant future many users, who do not require copious levels of storage, will find the pricing of SSD in mobile computers just as compelling as its features.

To determine when Flash-based SSD will be a desired technology for mainstream personal mobile computing, we determined the amount of storage a person currently needs and the premium that an individual places on such factors as durability and battery life. To do this, we surveyed our online panel of more than 15,000 U.S. technology users. The panel is comprised of a diverse group of people who represent a wide range of company sizes, industries, and areas of expertise.

We then defined the technology and cost direction of both SSDs and HDDs in portable computing applications. To this end we drew from primary/secondary research and proprietary sources to both clarify and refine our assumptions. Finally, a detailed forecast was calculated by segmenting the market into “storage classes” that were sensitive to the criteria we set based on user defined preferences and characteristics.
