On the Future of Portable Game Consoles - Analysis & Forecasts
|

This report analyzes the business landscape for portable gaming consoles (PGCs) - that is, portable devices optimized for robust gaming similar to console or PC gaming as opposed to simple parlor and single-player games (such as those available on most cell phones).
The report provides an analysis of the competitive environment, the major market players, as well as a discussion of consumer demand for PGCs. Finally, the report examines the role that robust gaming could play in mobile media convergence.
From the Report:
Since the early 90's, and despite numerous competitors jumping into the market, Nintendo has enjoyed a dominant share of the portable gaming player (PGP) market. Nintendo still enjoys a degree of dominance in this market with its Game Boy Advance line (with more than 70 million units sold worldwide since 2003) as well as the DS (which is currently outselling the PSP with 15 million units sold worldwide compared to PSP's eight million units).
Despite this dominance, Sony has upped the ante to play in the PGP space when it added support for music and video into the PSP. This seemed like a natural move for Sony given that robust portable gaming devices are well-suited to support music and video viewing with minor modifications or additional costs. Such platforms seem ready-made for converged media functionality.
Sony's PSP has forced Nintendo to address an important strategic and tactical decision: should it evolve its gaming platforms to include non-gaming features similar to Sony’s PSP, or should it remain a dedicated mobile gaming platform?
