Demand for small form factor Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) is expected to remain strong over the next five years. Personal Video Recorders (PVRs) will continue to represent the largest CE application for HDDs. In addition, the introduction of Apple’s video-capable iPod, and other competing portable video devices, will revitalize demand for 1.8-inch HDDs. Manufacturers will continue to look for applications for the 1-inch HDD segment, but increasing Flash capacities will seriously threaten demand for this form factor.
In-Stat’s latest report outlines the potential opportunities and challenges for manufacturers offering small form factor HDDs. It also offers a comparison between worldwide shipments for the overall HDD market and worldwide shipments for 3.5-inch drives and smaller. Finally, this report takes an in-depth look at specific CE product segments in which HDDs are integrated.
Five-year forecasts for the following CE product segments are included:
- Personal Video Recorders
- Video Game Consoles
- Portable MP3 players
- Portable Media Players
Additionally, it examines several emerging product segments, specifically discussing PDAs, GPS devices, digital camcorders, and mobile phones.
