Shenzhen-based Huawei Technologies is the new face of China's technological sophistication. With its sound technology, comprehensive product portfolio, and low R&D and production costs, it has emerged as a serious competitive threat to the more established global infrastructure vendors. It has made admirable progress in the cellular infrastructure space and carved out a niche for itself in the global CDMA market. According to Shiv K. Bakhshi, Ph.D., IDC's director of wireless infrastructure research, Huawei's strategy of developing a strong foothold in the emerging markets before launching a full-scale assault on the top-tier markets should hold the company in good stead as it pursues its global ambitions.
