India Telecommunications Report Q3 2007
|

With well over 7mn new wireless subscribers every month in India, the country remains the world’sfastest growing mobile market. Focusing this quarter especially closely on India’s wireless market, BMI’sIndia Telecommunications Report analyses the country’s increasingly competitive and high-growthmobile market. With penetration at just below 20%, there is clearly still huge room for potential growth.India is also set to enter a new phase of expanding telecoms services to rural India, where 70% of thepopulation live. This should spark off a wave of investment programmes as the country’s leadingoperators - Bharti Airtel, BSNL, Reliance and Vodafone Essar - look to extend their networks. In turn, infrastructure providers such as Nokia Siemens, Ericsson and Motorola are all hoping to win lucrativetenders. Indeed, Nokia Siemens has decided to invest US$100mn over the next three years in establishinga manufacturing plant for wireless network equipment in southern India and a research centre inBangalore. Production at the company’s Tamil Nadu plant should start in 2008.
