This IDC study (which is a translation of the Japanese report IDC #J8010105,) analyzes the Japan high-performance computing (HPC) market in 2007 according to the server product, server system, the vendor, and a consideration of the market size and trend. In addition, a forecast of the market from 2008 to 2012 was carried out.
The 2007 Japan HPC market has encountered drastic negative growth for two consecutive years. In particular, both supercomputers and IA-64 servers plunged sharply. On the other hand, x86 servers experienced positive growth. "In the Japan HPC market, the demand for x86 server-based HPC cluster systems has continued to grow. This trend will not be changed in the future. The x86 server is the product area in which we can expect strong new demand in addition to renewed demand", sums up Ikuo Takafuji, server research analyst, IDC Japan.
