This IDC study (which is a translation of the Japanese report IDC #J6020103) summarizes the results of a survey on the level of security awareness and the measures deployed among corporate members that use mobile PCs at the workplace. The survey was conducted in early April 2006 and the number of valid responses received was 1,207. The objective of the survey was to illuminate the impact of legislations such as the Personal Information Protection Law and news of information leaks on corporate mobile PC users, and subsequently present recommendations to vendors aimed at expanding the demand for PC. In the main survey, we explored the level of awareness among end-users with regard to security and the measures deployed. The trends among large companies, medium-small companies, and regional companies were also compared.
"The level of security awareness among end users is high but this does not necessarily translate into concrete security measures. Compared to large companies, medium-small and regional companies have inadequate measures deployed and lower awareness level. More active efforts from PC vendors are called for to realize stronger protection against corporate information leaks. Awareness-raising activities targeted at sales managers, purchasers, and end users have to be implemented," observes Keisuke Matsuo, senior market analyst, Personal Computing and Digital Imaging, IDC Japan.
