The global handset market will live another day, in spite of predictions otherwise. Manufacturers report accelerating production levels, relatively stable replacement rates, and growing demand for handsets with color displays and built-in cameras.
Based on this new data, shipments this year will rise more than 7%, year-over-year, and a similar rise is expected in 2004.
In the new report "Live Another Day: Year-End Review & 2003 Handset Forecast," In-Stat/MDR estimates that 433 million units will be shipped this year around the globe, and more than 465 million will be built and shipped in 2004.
In addition, this year's annual worldwide handset revenue appears healthy at more than $63 billion. That figure is expected to rise to more than $100 billion by 2007.
Some of the drivers for this growth include:
- Growing demand from Asian and emerging markets, like Russia
- New handset models with compelling features like MMS, Java capability, games and ring tones
- Affordable models with color displays
- Camera-phones at reasonable prices
- More handsets capable of multi-band roaming
If you're a product planner, a wireless applications developer or even a CEO who needs a better handle on where the handset market is headed in the next five years, this report is a must-have tool.
