Consumer Interest in Media Phones

CES 2005 proved that media phones, devices that offer cellular communications in addition to the ability to listen to digital music and watch video, whether digitally recorded, streamed through data pathways, or free-to-air broadcast, are emerging as a new product category. The real question is: are consumers really likely to want to listen to music and watch television on their mobile phones? Using primary consumer data, this Consumer Snapshot examines interest surrounding use of a phone as a portable media device.

Because of the rising success of digital music players and the diffusion of small digital audio files such as MP3s, many believe that adding digital music capabilities to a cellular phone will be a sure success. On the other hand, many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of features already packed into a cell phone - features which many consumers do not take the time to learn to use - leading some to believe that consumers would be more comfortable with an easier-to-use, application-specific media player..
