The Frost & Sullivan research service titled World Media Processing Board and HMP Software Market provides market sizing and forecast, strategic insight into the trends that are impacting vendors, and an in-depth analysis of selected competitors. In this research, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine the following market segments: DSP media processing boards, media processing HMP software, integrated boards with signaling and media processing, media gateway boards, ATCA-based solutions.

Market Overview

Migration to IP Helping Revive Market

Although the media processing enabling technology market saw little or no growth in the last few years, there are some significant trends that are shaping the market's future. Distributors reported that 2006 was the year when they saw real demand for IP in product sales, but which was also causing indecision about product selection due to anticipated migration. In order to take advantage of the vast potential of the upcoming migration in this market, vendors will have to understand the specific trends in the IP world, the broader spectrum of competitors in this market and their strengths and weaknesses. In addition, they will also need to figure out how they can use their own business model to succeed in the market.

On the enterprise side, private branch exchange (PBX), interactive voice response (IVR), contact centers, unified messaging and call logging continue to have long-term viability as target segments for enabling technology vendors. Further, there exists potential for growth for enabling technology vendors in the enterprise segment due to hosted applications. "In most application markets, migration to IP-based solutions is driving growth," notes the analyst of this research service. "However, in the IVR market and the PBX market, vendors are trying hard to allow customers to retain portions of their existing hardware during the migration, which limits the opportunity for new hardware sales."

Positive Outlook for the Host Media Processing (HMP) Software Market

As the market and vendors continued to promote HMP software, the HMP software market grew by over 30 percent in the last year. HMP is expected to provide better value proposition than digital signal processing (DSP) boards as it will allow the market to use more complete servers and higher-level scripting languages. Furthermore, for early product modeling, the necessary investment in DSP hardware is often a barrier to many application developers. Since with HMP no such investment is required, new entrants no longer require extensive telephony hardware expertise. Therefore, this barrier to market entry for new developers is lowered. Moreover, with increased migration to IP and most HMP technology introduced being IP-oriented, the HMP market assumes a positive outlook going into the future.

Across the different regions, changes in regulations, demographics, technology requirements, and demand for various applications determine demand for enabling technologies. The Americas are clearly at the forefront of telecom investment, but Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and Asia Pacific (APAC) are quicker to adopt some advanced applications such as interactive voice and video response (IVVR) and challenge vendors with some unique demands and requirements. APAC is already deploying 3G video telephony technology and IVVR. "In revenue terms, the Americas region continues to contribute the lion’s share with over 45 percent and this trend is likely to sustain throughout the forecast period," says the analyst. "EMEA and APAC will however experience higher growth rates as they represent the more untapped markets and exhibit greater interest in certain advanced technologies and applications."
