Rapid advances in handset hardware (in terms of CPUs, displays, cameras, radios, input methods and so on) and accelerating deployment of new services by mobile operators are placing increasing importance on handset software as the means to absorb and overcome these changes.
As in other areas of the consumer electronics industry, an attractive alternative for mobile handset OEMs and original design manufacturers (ODMs) to traditional ‘roll-your-own’ platforms based on realtime operating systems (RTOSs) or expensive commercial products is to look to developments in the open source community, and more specifically the Linux community.
This report looks at the suitability of Linux as a software platform across the handset spectrum and assesses its current status and future prospects.
