Market Overview

Core DWDM and Metro xWDM: Powerhouse of the Total Global Optical Transport and Switching Infrastructure Markets

The worldwide optical transport and switching infrastructure market should turn in a strong performance in 2007. "Growth in the core and metro optical transport segments is expected to be robust, with the optical cross-connect space characterized by a moderate increase," notes the analyst of this research service. "Combined, the core and metro optical transport segments are expected to contribute more than half of the total global optical market revenues in 2013."

At the same time, a steep decline is expected in the digital cross-connect and SONET/SDH add-drop multiplexer segments. This anticipated drop, however, will not affect the legacy multiservice provisioning platform (MSPP) business. MSPPs show some strength in the emerging markets, and a new breed of MSPP, the packet optical network platform, targeted at the transition from time division multiplexing (TDM) to packet is augmenting the role of the MSPP in the migration process.

Vendors Must Address Constantly Evolving Requirements to Convert Challenges to Opportunities

The varied pace of deployment of optical technologies in the major geographical regions by different service providers presents both challenges and opportunities for equipment vendors going forward. Vendors that address issues concerning complex requirements such as increased capacity and scalability as well as future proofing of networks are likely to be successful in transforming these challenges into opportunities.

Vendors must focus on incorporating new technologies that are likely candidates for standardization and continually meet more stringent price-performance thresholds. Upgrading the metro network to support new high-bandwidth connections to customers, significantly for video and other applications, has become a top priority for service providers. "Hence, it has also become critical for optical transport and switching infrastructure vendors to work hand-in-hand with service providers to address their current concerns, while offering a clear solution to future network deployment issues," notes the analyst.
