2005/2006 Market Outlook For Insulated Wire And Cable

| The market for electronic wire and cable is comprised of four segments: coaxial cable,
antenna lead-in wire and CATV/broadcast coaxial cable, hookup wire, and
multiconductor electronic wire and cable. In 2004, it is estimated that U.S.
manufacturers’ sales of electronic wire and cable rose by 4.2% to reach $2.4 billion.
Growth in this market during the 1990s was spurred by demand for faster Internet
connections and increased networking capabilities. From 1990 to 2000, manufacturers’
sales of electronic wire and cable expanded at an average annual rate of 7.6%.
Subsequently, manufacturers stepped up production. This resulted in overcapacity,
however, as demand was not as great as expected entering the new millennium. In
2001, for example, sales declined by 28.8%; another decline of 10.3% was posted in
2003.
Much of the growth in sales in 2004 could be attributed to rising copper prices, as a
number of manufacturers instituted price increases to offset their higher costs. Belden
