Peru’s consumer electronics devices market, defined as the addressable market for computing devices,mobile handsets and AV products, is projected to be worth around US$1.5bn in 2009. Signs of aslowdown in consumer spending were evident in H109 and the downward pressures on the Peruvianeconomy this year look set to be more pronounced than previously expected.

Despite current economic headwinds, there will be a number of growth areas. Government-backedaffordable computer programs are an important market driver in 2009. Meanwhile, more competition inthe mobile telecoms sector and expansion in rural areas should help to drive continued growth in themobile handset segment.

Computers

Computer hardware accounted for around36% of Peru’s consumer electronicsspending in 2008, with PC penetrationstill below 20%. BMI forecasts Peru’sPC sales (including notebooks andaccessories) to approach US$433mn in2009. The PC market was boosted inH109 by netbooks distributed by the OneLaptop Per Child programme. Computerhardware compound annual growth rate(CAGR) for the 2009-2013 period isforecast at about 10.3%, driven by salesof notebooks.

AV Devices

AV devices accounted for around 42% ofPeru’s consumer electronics spending in2008. Peru’s domestic AV device marketis estimated at US$652mn this year.Sales of digital TV sets and digitalcameras are projected to drive AVspending growth at a projected CAGR ofnearly 12.1% between 2009 and 2013, asPeru prepares to transfer to digitalbroadcasting based on Brazil’s SBTVDstandard.

Mobile Handsets

Mobile handset sales accounted foraround 22% of Peru’s consumerelectronics spending in 2008. Peru’smarket handset sales are expected togrow at a CAGR of 7.3% to US$465mnin 2013, as mobile subscriber penetrationreaches 93%. By the end of 2009, mobilenumber portability (MNP) should beavailable in Peru. Sales will bedominated by the low-tier segment, butthere will be increasing demand forfeatures such as MP3 players andcameras.
