This IDC study provides data and analysis on end-user organizations' plans and views on developer tools, developer networks/programs, and platforms. IDC surveyed 434 senior MIS employees in medium-sized and large organizations in Canada during September and October 2006. The study answers the following questions:
What is the state of deployment of platforms across Canadian firms? How do respondents expect this to change?
Who has influence on the decision as to which platform is selected? Who makes the final decision?
What is the preferred source of information when making a platform decision?
Which developer networks are developers affiliated with? Which application development tools are most widely used?
"There is a feedback loop between developer skills/preference and platform demand. Developers are an important influence on the selection of platform that an organization deploys and builds on. But equally, the momentum of a platform impacts developers' use and influence of it. The challenge is to successfully target both," says David Senf, manager, Canadian Applications Development and Infrastructure Software.
