Market Overview

Polish PPE Market Braces Itself for Increasing Competition

The Polish personal protective equipment (PPE) market has undergone significant changes following the country’s accession to the European Union (EU). New changes in the country’s health and safety laws requiring a wider cross-section of people to wear this equipment have greatly increased the market’s potential. Employers in Poland are now legally bound to provide workers with appropriate PPE to ensure their safety and minimise potential hazards. This is helping driving revenue growth in the Polish PPE market, which is fast catching up with its western counterparts. On the other hand, the rapid growth experienced in the market has made it vulnerable to competition from international participants such as major European companies and Asian manufacturers selling inexpensive products. While these companies have managed to gain a significant presence in the market, many Polish manufacturers continue to flourish due to a loyal customer base and keen market knowledge.

With all these changes taking place, competition in the Polish PPE market is higher than anywhere in western Europe, and the Polish buyer is in a much stronger and more influential position. "For the first time, the Polish end user has the power to dictate price and quality," says the analyst of this research service. "Market participants are so keen to gain new customers in this rapidly growing market that price has become a very low priority." The Polish end user is notoriously price sensitive and highly likely to favour companies that offer affordable products. Currently, the price factor is critically important to companies’ success but its importance could diminish with time.

Distributors Play a Crucial Role in Polish PPE Market Evolution

While new health and safety laws have expanded the potential of the Polish PPE market, the fact remains that adherence to these laws is still low. Participants need to focus on increasing awareness about the need to comply with the new norms. One way they could do this is through the right choice of distributor, as they exert great influence over the Polish market and play a key role in convincing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to buy PPE. Polish distributors have attained this powerful position mainly because they were the only participants to carry the full range of PPE before the larger European companies entered the market. This was a strong advantage since buyers of PPE tended to purchase from companies that could supply all types of protection equipment.

In 2006, around 81 per cent of all PPE sales in Poland took place through a secondary distributor, with only the largest end-user companies choosing to purchase directly from the manufacturer. "Thus, the importance of choosing the right distributor cannot be overstated," says the analyst. "Companies wishing to enter the Polish PPE market must give careful consideration to this issue since different distributors have various product specialities and target customers, and while some sell strictly low-end products, others sell only the top brands."
