The US printing machinery and equipment industry includes about 460 companies with combined annual revenue of about $3 billion. Major companies include offset equipment manufacturer Goss International and digital printer manufacturers Hewlett-Packard and Presstek. The industry is concentrated: the 50 largest companies have over 70 percent market share.

The printing machinery and equipment industry doesn't include home and office printers connected to PCs or small office/home office (SOHO) desktop publishing systems.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

Demand is driven by commercial print volume, which depends primarily on advertising and other business needs for printed material. About 35,000 commercial printers serve US business needs; about 1,400 daily newspapers with daily circulation over 50 million also drive industry demand. Profitability of individual companies depends primarily on manufacturing efficiencies. Large companies have advantages of economies of scale in purchasing and manufacturing. Small companies can compete effectively by marketing and manufacturing products for niche markets, such as ticket printing for sports events. Average annual revenue per worker for printer manufacturers is about $200,000.

PRODUCTS, OPERATIONS & TECHNOLOGY

Major products are printing presses (about 25 percent of industry revenue); prepress equipment (25 percent); binding machinery (10 percent); and parts and accessories (15 percent). The predominant printing press technology used is offset lithography, but the industry is transitioning to digital presses for many applications.
