Private Data Network/LAN Media Converters
Global Market Forecast

ElectroniCast announces a market forecast service, which provides a ten-year forecast of the market for media converters, used in private data networks (LANs).

There is strong user demand for greater bandwidth and increased interconnectivity to the desktop and throughout the network. This is matched by rapidly growing demand for global broadband interconnectivity. Interactive multimedia terminals, video-conferencing and rapid access to massive data bases are seen as productivity increasing tools with quick payback. This expanding capability, however, must often be accomplished without obsolescing the currently operational (legacy) network products. Companies offering products meeting these needs are achieving dynamic growth with high profits.

Local area networks are becoming larger and more complex. Reconfiguration, relocation and extension of LANs are expanding rapidly, due to organization restructuring, advancement in computer usage, the trend toward decentralized computing and the increasing LAN complexity. These continuing LAN changes, when made in cable networks, represent a major ongoing operational expense and a disruption of work.

WHY THIS STUDY

The ten-year forecast of the customer demand for media converters used in private data networks will provide information of high value to equipment and system manufacturers, component vendors and distributors, LAN suppliers, business and agency communication managers.

• Competitive analysis with Market Share Estimates
• New product markets; timing and price sensitivity
• New product availability, performance and pricing, standards, suppliers
• Constraints placed on manufacturers by user data communication cost requirements and growth plans
• Evolution of data and video applications, which will drive the accelerating, demand for advanced data communication networks.
• Impact of new standards
• Export and import opportunities

STUDY SCOPE

This study analyzes the product, technology, consumption and competitive status of data network media converters. It provides a ten-year Global market forecast for each type of product, and the significant component subsets. The forecast is in terms of quantity, average price and total value year-by-year. The product (equipment) market forecast also is segmented by end customer categories: business (large and medium-small), governmental agencies and educational institutions.

The Global consumption of media converters and components in local area networks will increase at a strong pace over the next five years, with rapidly rising quantity growth. This forecast covers Global consumption (use) and production of media converters used in commercial private data networks, including local area networks (LANs). Each significant transceiver and connector type is also segmented.

Network product suppliers are proliferating rapidly. While established standards such as Ethernet and Token Ring find their markets. "Fast" (100 Mbps) Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel are growing dramatically. Other endorsed and defacto standards will emerge. ATM switches are expanding rapidly in LAN operational use. ATM switching capability is penetrating hubs, concentrators and other LAN products.

LAN functions such as ATM switching and concentrating, also are being offered as telco services. This represents a substantial alternate market for LAN media converters.

Distributors and network assemblers have emerged as major factors in the highly fragmented LAN market. A major share of products, components and assemblies moves through these channels, rather than factory-direct. This forecast service analyzes current marketing channels and forecasts trends.

Imports and exports are quite substantial, relative to North American consumption of LAN equipment and components. Many foreign producers are establishing NAFTA production bases. North American LAN products, conversely, are finding strong acceptance in European and third world markets. These values and trends are analyzed and forecasted in this report.

METHODOLOGY

The information upon which the conclusions of this study are based is obtained from:

• Interviews, in-depth, of:
- Data network equipment and interconnect link developers and suppliers
- Advanced electronic, optoelectronic and electro optic component developers and suppliers
- Local area enterprise (private) data network planners and designers

• Telcos ("Virtual LANS")

• User staff

• Contract services

- Government laboratories; DARPA, NSF
- Industry laboratories

• ElectroniCast's existing data bases, built through over 18 years of market and technology analysis and forecasting in the communications and fiber optics industries.

• Review of pertinent published data.
