| US road warriors have yet to venture from the tried-and-true laptop/cell phone combo for wireless communications. Mean monthly air time consumption is less than 600 minutes, and EV-DO notwithstanding, road warriors stick to cellular voice calling, email, and personal information management.
Converged-device early-adopters are starting to appear among business travelers. Those on the road at least 30% of the time and those spending at least $300 a month on wireless carry SmartPhones or BlackBerrys more than twice as frequently as business travelers as a whole, and about a quarter of each of those two groups said they probably or definitely would switch from a laptop to a SmartPhone or PDA.
But about half of business travelers surveyed said they would not switch. Service and device providers have the challenges of heightening market awareness, ensuring satisfactory device battery performance, and providing devices that road warriors with entrenched work patterns can adopt painlessly.
This report profiles high-usage business travelers' amount of travel, wireless expenditures, and device choices, as well as device features used, liked, and found lacking. Finally, it examines laptop users' wireless communications habits and the likelihood of their switching to a handset. Hardware and service providers will find this report helpful in positioning business approaches for the coming changes in wireless communications.
