Samsung: After Sales Service Competitiveness in the US Market

| We think that the coming color display replacement cycle will work particularly well for Samsung in the US market. As color displays drove up the average selling price and margins for handset suppliers in 2003, camera phones were the only items helping to sustain margins in 2004. In particular, Samsung benefited from access to the latest display technology. Color display is one of the most expensive components in a handset. Samsung benefited from cutting-edge color STN-LCD panels from its affiliate, Samsung SDI (the world’s largest supplier of STN-LCDs), during the color handset boom of 2002-2003, and the migration to TFT-LCD display and embedded cameras. TFT-LCDs and cameras are the centerpiece in advancing handsets to EV-DO and ultimately to the 3G era, where motion images become a reality.
