Spain Telecommunications Report Q3 2007

In the first half of 2007, the number of Spanish mobile subscribers grew by just 2.3% to reach 48.135mnsubscribers. With a mobile penetration rate that is now over 110%, Spain has one of the highestteledensities in Western Europe. However, there are signs that mobile growth is slowing down, with thetotal number of new subscriber additions in Q107 and Q207 significantly down on the same quarters inthe previous year. One of the most notable features of the Spanish mobile market is the way in whichgrowth in the number of post-paid customers has outpaced prepaid growth; in the two years ending June2007, the number of Spanish prepaid customers has grown by 0.8%, while the country’s post-paidsubscriber base has increased by a much more significant 35%. Meanwhile, Spain’s third largest mobileoperator, Orange reported a loss of 56,000 customers in the first quarter of 2007 and a loss of 366,000 inQ207. Orange has attributed these losses to its decision to discount inactive prepaid customers from itstotal user base. Although this move suggests that Orange’s subscriber base is now a more accuratereflection of the operator’s true active subscriber total, it raises questions about the extent to which largerrivals Telefónica and Vodafone are also harbouring inactive prepaid customers within their reportedsubscriber totals.
