Much has been written about Intelligent Mobile VPNs that will allow enterprises to experience what is called “ubiquitous mobility”. Inside the enterprise, wireless networks are covering more physical space. Outside, cellular voice and data networks are making up a greater portion of IT spend. The end result is an increasingly large mobile user base that continues to push for a more seamless mobile experience. Organizations augmenting or upgrading VPN and other access technology are also considering multinetwork-capable mobile access solutions. Such investments are marketed as allowing users to transparently, seamlessly, and securely roam across multiple networks to access corporate assets, applications, and tools.

In our view, intelligent mobile VPNs are currently a niche technology marketed to highly mobile markets and organizations such as emergency services and utilities. Some mobile enterprises such as logistics and transportation firms are looking to shift investments to network vendors that allow IT to harness the power of connectivity across mobile networks. While current solutions are primarily from niche vendors, mobile operations teams should consider this a critical component of any VPN-based remote access solution as the use of multiple networks proliferates within their organizations. However, in our view, “ubiquitous mobility” is at least 5 - 10 years away for most Global 2000 companies.

In this report, we present the results of our 2008 Global Enterprise Telecommunications Survey and examine the current state of enterprise mobile connectivity among the Forbes Global 2000 companies. First of all, we expect proliferation of Multiple Networks to happen in the next 5 - 10 years. A chart in this report summarizes our view on key elements, technologies, and time frames toward ubiquitous enterprise mobility. We forecast that Intelligent Mobile VPN Access to multiple mobile networks is at least 5 years away. We explore Intelligent Mobile VPN solutions that are currently used by Global 2000 enterprises, and highlight elements of a successful intelligent mobile VPN. Based on all of the information, we give strategy recommendations for both Global 2000 enterprises and vendors of mobile VPN solutions.
