The stress/strain measurement equipment market is segmented into two product types, which include the conventional and the fiber optic methods. With the growing need to measure stress and strain performance in the oil and gas, civil, and aerospace industries, among others, the market is poised for growth.

Remote Monitoring: Key Factor Driving Fiber Optic Methods

Fiber optic methods such as FBG, Rayleigh scattering, and Brillouin scattering are being increasingly used in deploying equipment to measure strain. These products are expected to compete with conventional methods such as strain gages and load cells. At present, remote monitoring, which remains a concern in the conventional methods, is a dominant factor driving the significance of fiber optic methods, particularly in situations where the sensor and the instrument are placed at a distance of several miles. However, the impact of fiber optic products is likely to take at least another decade to overcome the growth of the mature conventional measurement equipment market.

The stress/strain measurement equipment market totaled to $3,240.1 million in 2006, which represented an increase of 3.6 percent from that of the previous year. Currently, the major chunk of revenues is generated from conventional methods. In 2006, this market segment contributed to 97.1 percent of the total revenues and the fiber optic market’s share was a meager 2.9 percent.
