These products are expected to compete with conventional methods such as strain gages and load cells. At present, remote monitoring, which remains a concern in the conventional methods, is a dominant factor driving the significance of fiber optic methods, particularly in situations where the sensor and the instrument are placed at a distance of several miles. However, the impact of fiber optic products is likely to take at least another decade to overcome the growth of the mature conventional measurement equipment market.
The stress/strain measurement equipment market totaled to $3,240.1 million in 2006, which represented an increase of 3.6 percent from that of the previous year. Currently, the major chunk of revenues is generated from conventional methods.
