Thailand Telecommunications Report Q1 2008

With all three major mobile operators now providing subscriber figures for the quarter ended June 2007,we estimate that there were some 47.3mn mobile subscribers. This would represent penetration rates of72%, and while it might be expected that the number of net additions in Q207, given the maturity of themarket, would illustrate a slowdown in subscriber growth compared to Q206, this has not been the case.Indeed, AIS, DTAC and True Move reported a combined 3.7mn net additions in Q207, against 2mn netadditions in the previous year. With growth continuing to remain robust, we believe that this is derivedfrom the rural areas, with urban areas already at saturation. Further, while interconnection fees wereintroduced to bring stability to prices, in an effort to dilute a potential price war, Thailand is entering anera of convergence.
