This IDC Flash discusses VMware's June 5 launch of VMware Infrastructure 3 (VI 3) building on the single system virtualization and resource management capabilities in the first ESX Server product and the central management and live virtual machine migration (VMotion) features in second-generation products. VI 3 extends the core virtual machine capabilities to support workloads that require up to four processors and adds a host of features designed to broaden the use cases for virtual machines. Specifically, the company announced this next version of the software suite will have options for a distributed file system, a resource scheduler, consolidated backup, and high availability (HA) features, in addition to the Virtual Center and VMotion capabilities brought to market in the second major release.
