Server virtualization has arrived in a big way as a mainstream technology. The results of the Yankee Group 2006 Global Server Virtualization Survey reveal that three out of four businesses—or 76% of companies—already use or plan to deploy the technology.
Yankee Group conducted a web-based, self-selecting survey of corporate users in late May and early June 2006. The independent survey polled more than 700 IT managers and C-level executives across a wide variety of vertical and horizontal businesses spanning the globe. Yankee Group supplemented the survey responses with anecdotal data obtained via first-person customer interviews.
The survey shows that for the overwhelming majority of corporations, the major question is when—not if—they will implement virtualization in the corporate data center. Only 4% of respondents said they have no plans to install a virtualization solution. And of the 76% that affirmed they will deploy virtualization, nearly two-thirds—62%—already have a virtualization solution in place or are in the process of migrating. Another 22% indicated they will install server virtualization within the next 12 months.
