WLAN vendors must augment the intrusion detection and prevention capabilities in their infrastructure
products as Wi-Fi networks become widespread and WLANs become more of a target for hackers.
Ubiquitous WLAN access makes enterprise workers more productive and allows IT to migrate networked
applications to the cheapest, most available Layer 1 transport medium: open air. However, hacker hobbyists
and network-savvy criminals now regard 802.11 technology as juicy a target as Microsoft Windows or
Internet Explorer for executing data and identity theft schemes. Standalone WLAN intrusion prevention
systems (WIPS) from pure-play vendors have filled in the gaps of what a WLAN infrastructure can do to
protect itself (see Exhibit 1). As organizations face new security challenges as a result of ubiquitous Wi-Fi,
WLAN vendors must better integrate WIDS features and management into larger enterprise WLAN and wired
network infrastructure. Pure-play WIDS vendors must acquire or become more tightly aligned with WLAN
vendors during the next 3 to 5 years.
