It was fun while it lasted, but the first phase of the mobile connectivity revolution in Europe is now over. To mark its passing, we reflect on its influence. The mobile voice and messaging services that characterized phase 1 have changed peoples’ lives forever. The list of behavioral changes is endless. Individuals are now connected through voice and text anywhere and anytime, forming the basis for our conception of the Anywhere Consumer, Anywhere Network and Anywhere Enterprise. Age-old barriers to communications, including distance, availability and cost, have been eroded. This revolution has not just affected a few; it has empowered millions. Phase 1 has changed not only the way we communicate, but also the way we live. It’s worth dwelling momentarily on a handful of the many critical enablers of this revolution:
- Harmonized spectrum drove network and end-user device costs down to previously unimaginable levels.
- Innovation in product design and features meant mobile phones became as much a fashion statement, and a means of individual expression, as they were a device for making phone calls.
- Ubiquitous coverage was essential. It delivered on the anywhere, anytime promise for voice and messaging.
- Innovative payment methods were important. The introduction of prepaid services in 1994 was a catalyst for unprecedented market growth in the mid-to-late 1990s.
The combination of these and other factors created an ideal situation where supply and demand were well-matched for two decades, and usage of mobile services exploded. As a result, some major winners and losers emerged. The main winners were the mobile network operators (MNOs), the most innovative handset and network technology vendors, and the many providers of enabling technologies that created value in the mobile voice/text ecosystem in various ways.
