At the heart of Wi-Fi Mesh Networks are Wi-Fi Mesh Access Points, i.e. nodes that combine a Wi-Fi AP and wireless mesh routing functionality. In-Stat expects more than 50 thousand Wi-Fi mesh AP unit shipments in 2006, with almost 100 thousand unit shipments expected in 2010. Market leaders include Tropos, Nortel, Strix, BelAir, and SkyPilot. Other contenders include Cisco, RoamAD, Motorola, and Proxim.
Primary market segments where Wi-Fi mesh networks are being deployed include the following: municipalities (for public access, or shared public/private, with some sort of city or local government involvement), government-sponsored private networks for public safety and transportation, campus deployments such as stadiums, universities, military bases and airports, and broadband access for underserved regions.
