| WLAN technologies were originally designed to set up wireless LANs (Local Area Network), composed of several dozen computers and peripherals. A number of WLAN technologies exist, forming three families of standards: the American family of 802.11 standards (the major ones being 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11a and 802.11h), developed by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), European HiperLAN standards (HiperLAN1 and HiperLAN2), developed by the ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) and the American HomeRF standard, which is primarily aimed at home applications.
