HP announced the HP Inkjet Web Press, a thermal drop-on-demand inkjet production color printer capable of speeds of 400 linear feet per minute on webs as wide as 30 inches at its pre-Drupa briefing in Israel. Based on a three-up duplex imposition, this puts the device’s speed at 2,600 letter-sized four-color images per minute. The device uses aqueous pigment-based inks and a bonding agent to improve print quality. It will have a list price of approximately $2.5 million for a 4/4 configuration. HP estimates that the consumable cost will be less than a penny for a four-color letter/A4-sized image at 30% coverage. HP will show the device at Drupa 2008 and expects to have it ready for sale in the second half of 2009.
