This report looks at the usage patterns and plans of the education vertical market for wireless data and reports about its use of industry-specific applications, horizontal applications, and geographic scope of solution. The data presented are based upon primary research obtained in a recent survey that included 35 US education decision makers.
This report also looks at the spending among education organizations. The focus is on wireless services for both wireless voice and mobile data and the spending on wireless equipment within this vertical market. To put the wireless spending data in perspective, it is compared with wireline spending. The key finding is that spending on wireless services is projected to nearly match spending on wireline services by 2011. This is significant, as wireless spending in the majority of education organizations is managed very casually. As it becomes the dominant telecommunications cost within organizations, this expense should be watched more closely.
Another significant finding is that mobile data spending is growing much faster than the spending for wireless voice services. Wireless voice growth is in single digits, with a 7% CAGR, while mobile data is nearly five times that, with a 34% CAGR over the forecasted period. Some within the telecommunications industry tend to focus on voice services, but this focus would miss the greatest growth opportunities.
