New standards in the WLAN field have largely solved inherent security vulnerabilities in this technology, but moving organisations to the new standards is proving slow and difficult. The incidence of malware on mobile devices has slowly increased, but network operators have had success in containing the problem. The rise of converged networks and Internet access from mobile devices threatens this equilibrium. Alongside this, we are seeing increasing use of Bluetooth as a corridor along which attacks are launched, and residual unprotected WLAN networks have allowed some major incidents to occur, notably the breach at TJX. This report reviews advances in wireless network security.
