| This IDC study provides IDC's 2004 worldwide market analysis and forecast for a
critical component in the market for network storage solutions. It forecasts
unit and port shipments, as well as factory and market revenue for the sale of
Fibre Channel (FC) host bus adapters (HBAs), including both single-port and
multiport HBAs. The study also includes 2003 vendor market shares for FC HBA
revenue and shipments.
This study discusses how future trends in server shipments, multiport HBAs, and
competing technologies, such as iSCSI will affect the competitive position of
HBA vendors. It also provides specific advice to these companies on how to best
take advantage of the changing world of networked storage.
"The next two years promise to be a time of sustained revenue growth for FC HBA
suppliers as companies move toward SAN-based storage architectures; however,
changes in technology and product mix will ensure that the market remains
highly dynamic," said Richard Villars, vice president of the Storage System
service at IDC. "Significant growth in HBA shipments beyond 2005 will need to
come almost exclusively from HBAs targeted at volume servers, and this will
have a significant impact on HBA prices and paths to market."
