This IDC study includes vendor market share analysis on a worldwide basis for the mobile phone semiconductor market for 2004. The 2004 mobile phone?specific semiconductor market grew 30% to almost $18 billion. Increasing multimedia and applications capabilities and evolving air interfaces both contributed to this growth. The market leaders, TI and QUALCOMM, remained number 1 and 2, respectively, based on aggressive product diversification strategies.
"3G provided much of the growth in mobile phone semiconductors in 2004, and leading 3G chip vendors increased their overall mobile phone share positions with advanced technologies and multichip solutions. Chipmakers must have a road map to 3G and the ability to offer products to a wide range of mobile phone market subsegments in order to maintain or increase their shares going forward." ? Allen Leibovitch, program manager, Semiconductors Research
