This IDC Forecast Update presents a cumulative update of the smart handheld device market based on the latest outlook from IDC's Mobile Markets research group. Smart handheld device forecasts are updated on a quarterly basis. All forecasts in this document supercede the previous forecasts contained within Worldwide Smart Handheld Device 2005-2009 Forecast and Analysis: Passing the Torch (IDC #33415, May 2005).

The smart handheld device market is segmented into two distinct device groups:

Handheld devices. These devices bring a wide range of mobile functionality to their users. Either pen or keypad centric, they are designed to access and manage data. They may include wireless capabilities to enable Internet access and text communication, but not telephony. This category includes pen-based handheld devices and keypad-based handheld devices. Handheld devices with telephony capabilities are tracked within the converged mobile device category. Converged mobile devices. These mobile devices combine the features of mobile phones with the features of handheld devices. Positioned to solve the "multiple device question" and designed to obviate the need to carry a mobile phone and a pen-based handheld or a mobile phone and a pager, for example, these devices must match wireless telephony capability to the following operating systems or application environments: Symbian, Linux, Microsoft Windows Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition or Smartphone, or Palm OS. IDC also includes WAN telephony-enabled Research in Motion (RIM) BlackBerry devices in this category. All such devices must include the ability to download data to local storage, run applications, and store user data, in addition to personal information management (PIM) capabilities. Converged mobile devices must also offer the full extent of their application-processing capabilities to the user, regardless of network availability.
